Darwin and natural selection

Cards (5)

  • What did Darwins studies show
Many species of animals and plants alive today are similar to extinct species
  • What was his theory of evolution with natural selection
Within a species there's a wide range of genetic variation. Individuals with characteristics most suited to the environment are more likely to survive and breed. These characteristics that enabled animals to survive have been passed down
  • Why was his theory only gradually accepted
People in this time strongly believed in god and he made the animals and plants on earth. Scientists felt he didn't have enough evidence in his work and people didn't understand how characteristics were inherited.
  • What was lamarcks theory
When a characterstic is more regular used it becomes strongly developed which means its passed onto their offspring.
  • What was the problems with lamarcks theory
The changes that often occur in an organisms lifetime can't be passed onto an offspring.
