  • What is full-time employment?
    where a business takes on an employee that is expected to work the full working week - usually five days
  • What is part-time employment?
    employees that work fewer hours than full-time colleagues
  • What is job share?
    where two part-time workers share the work and pay of a single full time worker
  • What is casual employment?
    workers that do not get any guarantee of work with variable and uncertain shifts. Some are "on-call" meaning an employer can ask them to work on very short notice. Often working in the hospitality industry
  • What is seasonal employment?
    long-time work at a particular time of year for a short amount of time for example a mall santa for christmas, or a lifeguard at a local pool
  • What is temporary employment?
    someone hired for likely full-time work for a short period of time to cover for absent workers. Such as those on maternity leave or long-term sickness
  • What is the hospitality industry?
    when companies entertain clients or take them on trips in order to get business
  • What department is responsible for employing staff?
    human resources department
  • Why may a business need new staff?
    • the business is expanding and more labour is needed
    • people are leaving and they need to be replaced
    • people are required for a temporary period to cover staff absences

    a document that shows the tasks, duties and responsibilities expected of a worker for a particular job
  • What is a person specification?
    a personal profile of the type of person needed to do a particular job
  • What is a job application form?
    a standard document used to collect information from a job applicant
  • What is a curriculum vitae (CV)?
    a document used by a job seeker that lists personal details, qualifications, work experience, referees and other details
  • What is a shortlist?
    a list of the most suitable people for a job, chosen from all the people who were first considered
  • What is induction?
    the introduction of someone into a new job, company or position
  • What are the stages in the recruitment process?
    • identify the number and type of staff needed to be recruited and also choose between full-time, part-time, temporary and permanent workers
    • prepare a job description and person specification
    • advertise using appropriate media
    • evaluate applicants and create a shortlist
    • interview shortlisted applicants
    • evaluate interviews and decide who to hire
    • give polite feedback to unsuccessful applicants

    • it is cheaper because it saves on advertising
    • they will be familiar with the company policy and working practices
    • staff may be more motivated if they know there is a chance of promotion

    • a business will have a much larger pool of potential employees to choose from
    • a new person may be very talented and have some fresh ideas, which could help the business become more competitive
