  • "Community and all that nonsense... A man has to look after his business, himself and his own"

    -Business has a dual meaning: staying out of matters that do not concern you or his actual profits. All of this shows his obesesion with wealth and his disregard of the working-class problems
    -His view of self-preservation as opposed to social responsibility ( represents the extreme of capitalists).
    -AIC message of acting in the best interest of society rather than yourself (equality). Mr B is the antithesis of this.
  • "Its my duty to keep labor costs down" - Arthur Birling Act 1
    -Mr. B. doesn't see his employees as humans- he only sees them as business.
    -Illustrates how he has no empathy for workers and neglect to consider how his actions affect others.
    -Priestlty wants the working class to see the greedy capitalists do not care about their well-being and are simply trying to exploit them.
    -Mr. B. also has these views at the end of the play emphasising the stubbornness of the capitalists and their hesitance to change their ways.
