Coastal Erosion - Geography

Cards (12)

  • What are the 4 types of erosion?
    Hydraulic action
    Attrition
    Abrasion
    Solution
  • What is Hydraulic action?
The sheer force of the waves crashing against the shore and cliffs. The power of the wave's forces air into cracks, compresses it and blows the rocks apart as the pressure is released.
  • What is attrition?
when rocks and pebbles are carried by the waves smash into each other, wearing each other away and gradually becoming smaller, rounder and smoother.
  • What is Abrasion? (corrasion)
The process of rocks and pebbles are carried by the waves wearing away rocks as they are thrown against cliffs.
  • What is solution? (corrosion)
When chemicals in the seawater dissolve minerals in the rocks, causing them to break up
  • What are the 4 types of transportation?
    Traction
    Saltation
    Suspension
    Solution
  • What is Traction?
Large particles like boulders are pushed along the seabed by the force of the river.
  • What is Saltation?
Pebble-sized particles are bounced along the seabed by the force of the water.
  • What is Suspension?
Small particles like silt and clay are carried along in the water.
  • What is solution?
Soluble materials like limestone dissolve in the water and are carried along.
  • What is mechanical weathering?
The breakdown of rock WITHOUT changing it chemical composition.
  • What is chemical weathering?
The breakdown of rock by changing it chemical composition.
