social support

    Cards (7)

    • Independent behaviour - you carry out actions based on your own wants and needs
    • Anti conformist - you intentionally go against the majority for the sake of making a statement
    • Social support - you have an ally, meaning resisting obedience is easier.
    • Asch ( 1951 ) found that if an ally was provided, conformity decreased to 5.5 %
    • Individuals who have an ally no longer fear being ridiculed, allowing them to avoid normative social influence
    • AO3. There is real world application for social support. During the suffragette movement, more women joining the organisation lead to the snowball effect. This demonstrates how social support can lead to the minority becoming the majority
    • AO3. There is research support from Milgram. In one of his variations, the real participant was paired with two confederates who also played the role of teachers. The two confederates refused to go on and withdrew early. In this variation, obedience dropped from 65 % to 10 %. this shows that if someone has support for their desire to disobey, they are more likely to resist the pressure of an authority figure.
