  • head injuries - concussion
    normally caused by a blow to the head - symptoms include headaches, loss of balance, and slurred speech
  • fractures
    broken or cracked bone - symptoms include pain and possibly deformity - most common type of fracture is a closed fracture where a bone is broken but there is no puncture through the skin
  • dislocation
    when a bone is forced out of its normal position - deformity and swelling will be present
  • sprain (LIGAMENTS)
    a damages ligament can occur when stretching too far past the normal range of a joint - ankle sprains are most common in sports which require twisting and turning at speed
  • strains (MUSCLES)
    muscle pulls and tears are example of strains - muscle pulls or tears are very common in sports which require powerful contractions e.g. sprinting
  • soft and hard tissue injuries
    this type of injury covers bruises and contusions - contact sports are likely to result in lots of soft tissue injuries
  • skin damage
    abrasions, cuts and blisters are common injuries in sports - marathon runners may experience blisters on their feet due to the repetitive nature of running
