• decide the verdict of defendant
• 11 jurors and 1 head juror
• have no legal knowledge (lay people) -> makes a fair trial
• used for most serious cases eg murder, rape, GBH
• unanimous verdict must be 10/2 or 11/1 to be decided guilty beyond reasonable doubt
• receive advice on the law from the judge
• deicide on facts and evidence, what is heard in the courtroom
• not allowed to discuss with anyone outside the jury room
• try less than 1% of all criminal cases
• majority verdicts introduced to prevent jury tampering (Twomey 2009)
• tried in crown court, indictable cases
• age 18-75
• not allowed to be on jury if:

  • been on probation
  • sentenced to prison/community service
  • on bail
• have to be sworn/affirmed in
• summoned again within 2 years -> right to refuse service
