Osmosis in plant cells

• What is the aim for this practical?

  To investigate the effect of different sugar solutions on plant tissue (potato cylinders).
• The steps:

  • Cut identical potato cylinders.
  • Measure and record their starting mass.
  • Place them in different concentrations of sugar solution (e.g., 0.0M, 0.2M, 0.5M).
  • Leave for 30 minutes to 1 hour.
  • Remove, dry, and remeasure their final mass.
  • Calculate the percentage change in mass to determine water movement.
• What is the independent variable?

  Sugar solution concentration.
• What is the dependent variable?

  Change in mass of potato.
• What is the control variable?

  Time left in solution, temperature, volume of solution.
