I-V Characteristics

Cards (3)

  • Method for I-V Characteristics?
    1. Set up circuit with a voltage supply, ammeter, fixed and variable resistor
    2. Vary voltage across component by changing resistance of variable resistor, using a range of voltages, between 8-10 readings
    3. For each voltage, record value of current from ammeter 3 times and calculate average current
    4. Increase voltage further in steps of 0.5V, repeating steps 2/3
    5. Reverse terminals of power supply and take readings for the negative voltage/current
    6. Replace the fixed resistor with the filament lamp, then the diode, repeating the experiment for each
  • Caution for I-V Characteristics?
Wires and components may become hot after a current passes through. Allow to cool before handling.
    • Disconnect the power supply when not taking readings to prevent overheating.
    • Be aware that too high a voltage may damage components and cause excessive heating. Switch your circuit off if you think the voltage is too high.
