Representation

Cards (5)

  • Age is presented quite stereotypically in the video as the boy is portrayed as well-meaning but impulsive, ignoring the fears of his wiser, concerned mother. The young-adult couple is shown as wealthy and sexually active but ultimately irresponsible.
  • TLC are shown as supernatural beings as they manifest from the water-based geographical features in the chorus of the song (lakes, oceans, and an actual waterfall)
  • In human form, TLC creates a complex representation of gender with their makeup and costume. Parts of their image are traditionally feminine (makeup accentuating features, skimpy tops etc). However, some elements such as loose-fitting trousers are more masculine
  • Social issues are represented sympathetically, linking to the band's comment that they wanted to send a message "without preaching." The young black man isn't a typical gangster but is represented as someone trying to make easy money to help his family but becomes a victim if the two black male gang members (who do reinforce ethnic and gender stereotypes through use of props , dress and gesture codes)
  • The social issues are represented sympathetically with the sexuality of the couple being represented as glamorous and intimate but later multiple close-up shots of his illness encourage our empathy rather than condemnation
