    • 1974, the minister for Bantu Education and development (Botha), made the use of Afrikaans compulsory from the last year of primary school
    • Botha's successor Treunicht, insisted half of the lessons (Maths) be taught in Afrikaans
    • Not all African children spoke Afrikaans, which was seen as the language of repression
    • Children resented being taught in a language they did not know enough about to learn the content.
