Labelling theory - reoffending

Cards (3)

  • Labelling - Reoffending
    • Label is applied after crime committed
    • Judged and labelled by society
    • Individual feels little opportunity to change
    • Label is internalised so individual reoffends
  • weakness 1 of labelling theory
One weakness of labelling theory is that it is Socially sensitive as it suggests all people labelled as something negative will commit crime. This is a weakness as may lead to unnecessary restrictions lowering the ethics
  • Weakness 2 of labelling theory
Another weakness of labelling theory is that it is highly reductive, focusing on one cause of criminality. This means it may be too simplistic as it doesn’t consider complexity of why someone may become a criminal beyond the label society gives them.
