what does
xylem
do?
carries water and mineral salts from roots up shoot - leaves in
transpiration stream

phloem
do?
phloem transports sugars - amino acids and sucrose from where they are made in the leaves and do
translocation
what do root hairs do?
cell contains long hairs which stick out of soil - covered with millions of microscopic hairs - plant gives large SA for absorbing water from soil
usualy a higher concentration of water in soil than in the plant - water drawn into root hair cell by osmosis
