Alkalis

• Many everyday substances are alkaline. They feel soapy to the touch. Like acids, they can be corrosive. Alkalis are present in many of the cleaning substances used in our homes.
• Kitchen cleaners are alkaline because they contain ammonia or sodium hydroxide, which attack grease
• A base is a metal oxide or a metal hydroxide. An alkali is a base that dissolves in water.
