  • Motivation is the internal mechanism and eternal stimuli which arouse and direct our behaviour
  • Motivation:
    • motivation involves our inner drive towards achieving a goal
    • motivation depends on external pressures and rewards that we perceive in our environment
    • motivation concerns intensity (arousal level) and the direction of our behaviour
  • Intrinsic motivation is the internal drive or willpower to participate or perform well for ones self
  • Intrinsic motivation examples:
    • fun
    • enjoyment
    • satisfaction
    • feel god about yourself
  • Extrinsic motivation is the external influences on the performer to participate or perform well.
  • Extrinsic motivation examples:
    • rewards
    • trophies
    • money
    • praise
  • Relationship between intrinsic and extrinsic rewards:
    • debated whether external rewards undermine or enhance intrinsic motives
    • the desire to win can be extrinsic and intrinsic
    • motivation is a mixture of both
    • Weinberg states 'rewards do not inherently undermine intrinsic motivation' (depends on individuals perception)
    • to much emphasis on winning can take the pleasure out of taking part
