coeliac disease

Cards (8)

  • This is when the immune system attacks its own cell when a patients eats gluten.  this is due to the substance that makes up gluten called gliadin. When the body detects gliadin, it cause the immune system to release white blood cells and the chemicals from the white blood cells enter the tissue of the small intestines and it increases the amount of blood flow to the tissue causing it to become red and swallow(inflammation).
  • The small intestines are cover with little hair like structures called villi however in coeliac disease the inflammation due to gluten cause the villi to become flattened which reduce its ability to absorb the nutrients
  • Some of the environmental factors that could cause coeliac disease is if you are not breastfed when they are a baby and gluten is introduced into their diet. However, the most likely  cause of coeliac is a digestive system infection like rotavirus infection during early childhood
  • One symptom of coeliac is diarrhea this is mainly due to the fact that the small bowl is not properly absorb nutrients this is called malabsorption. This can cause the stool to have high levels of fat this is called steatorrhea making it look greasy.
  • Another symptom of coeliac is an itchy rash also known as dermatitis herpetiformis. This is caused due to the autoimmune response as the antibodies released are deposited on the skin and they bind to antigen which can causes inflammation leading to become itchy and cause blisters.
  • Another symptom if coeliac is peripheral neuropathy (tingling and numbness of hands and feet). This is due to the antibodies produce when the body is exposed to gluten. As it damages the nerves(the myelin sheath) especially the long nerves in the feet and the hand.
  • Another symptom of coeliac is ataxia (problem coordinating, balance and speech). This is due to the antibodies released when gluten is detected in the body which mistakenly attack part of the brain called the cerebellum, this part of the brain is responsible for balance, speech, posture, walking and running.
  • If coeliac is left untreated it can also lead to malnutrition due to the villi being damaged and not being able to properly absorb other nutrients from food leading the patients to be severely nutritional deficiencies  meaning the cell will not have an enough energy to do it function which can cause other problems
