signifcane in dna seq in coding regions for prokaryotes

Cards (5)

    • In prokaryotic organisms most of its DNA sequences are in the coding region of DNA.
    • These sequences are responsible for the production of enzymes with the function to repair DNA in the event of mutation.
    • If these sequences are mutated →  prokaryotes have lower capacity to repair mutation → rate of spontaneous and induced mutation spikes in prokaryotes
  • Junk DNA → Neither protein coding or regulatory function. This portion of DNA contains thousands of repeats of DNA sequences which are caused by viruses that inserted copies of a segment of their genetic material
    • Inserted DNA elements are called transposons
    • Transposons → are considered mutations if they occur near genes or on promoter regions where they change gene expression/functioning
