In prokaryotic organisms most of its DNA sequences are in the coding region of DNA.
These sequences are responsible for the production of enzymes with the function to repair DNA in the event of mutation.
If these sequences are mutated → prokaryotes have lower capacity to repair mutation → rate of spontaneous and inducedmutation spikes in prokaryotes
Junk DNA → Neither proteincoding or regulatory function. This portion of DNA contains thousands of repeats of DNA sequences which are caused by viruses that inserted copies of a segment of their genetic material
Inserted DNA elements are called transposons
Transposons → are considered mutations if they occur near genes or on promoter regions where they change gene expression/functioning
