  • UN troop levels were set originally at 7,500 but only 4,500 were ever sent due to disagreements over funding at the UN; these disagreements continued until March 1989, so on 1 April 1989 (Official start of the Ceasefire) only 300 UNTAG observers were in place.
    In the run-up to elections, there were claims that intimidation, harassment and violent acts were committed by both sides.
    33 UNTAG personnel were killed during the mission.
