how hitler became chancellor

• after bruning, von papen (friend of hindenburg) became chancellor
• july 1932- von papen held elections hoping to gain more support

  • instead, nazis won 230 seats + became largest party
• hitler demanded the post of chancellor

  • hindenburg refused as he didnt like hitler
• nov 1932- von papen arranged another election

  • won fewer seats
  • nazi party fell to 196 but still the largest party
• von papen suggested aboloshing Weimar consitiution

  • von schleicher persuaded hindenburg that it would lead to a civil war
  • hindenburg lost confidence in von p and then appointed von s as chancellor
• jan 1933- von s had no political support, was unable to govern

  • asked hindengurg to make him head of military dictatorship but he refuses
  • von p then suggests to make hitler chancellor and him as vice chancellor
  • 31st jan 1933- hitler becomes chancellor
