Cards (12)

  • Typically, film posters are very visual and rely on images and limited text to promote the film. The images need to give the audience an idea of the film genre and hint at the narrative
  • The central image is a mid-shot of James Bond, smartly dressed holding a gun across his body. The dominance of his image suggests he is the film's protagonist. According to Propp he would be the hero
  • Bond's attire connotes business and professionalism and the gun, an iconic part of Bond's uniform, signifies danger and action
  • Bond is looking directly at the audience, seemingly making eye contact. The intensity of his stare and lack of a smile connotes how he expects to be taken seriously and he is calm despite the chaos surrounding. This informs the audience of his ability to keep composure in any situation
  • Roger Moore's name is placed directly above Bond's image which is a common convention for film posters. This would entice the audience as Moore was a household name after he starred in the last Bond film.
  • The title of the film appears with the author's name at the bottom. The credit block, detailing industry information, is tucked away to not divert audiences' attention.
  • At the bottom of the frame is an extreme close-up golden gun which suggests an attempted assassination of the protagonist.
  • The colour of the gun connotes wealth and status and the fact we can only see the hand of the shooter creates an enigma code as we want to find out who is trying to kill Bond
  • We would consider the person loading the gun-pointed at Bond Propp's villain
  • Surrounding Bond are more enemies and people trying to kill him. These images, combined with the images of destruction and explosions, are codes to signify to the audience this genre is action/thriller
  • As typical of Bond films, the protagonist is flanked by females wearing very few clothes showing how women were sexualised within the media at the time of production (Male Gaze)
  • One female is looking at the assassin pointing the gun at Bond whilst the other is seemingly putting her arm out to protect him. This may be another enigma code, suggesting Bond has female allies and enemies but all looking the same making it hard to distinguish between them
