Mozambique

• Civil war began shortly after Mozambique gained independence from Portugal in 1975.

  Conflict occurred between:

  Mozambican Liberation Force (government) Vs. South African backed Mozambique Resistance Movement (RENAMO)
• 1991

  • Mozambique had severe drought, the economy was bad and the government was under strain.
  • Mozambican people tried to escape both the war and the hunger

  By October 1922, both sides were exhausted

  • Signed the General Peace Agreement (GPA)
  • Asked the UN to send in peacekeeping forces
• December 1992


  Security council created ONUMOZ

  (UN Mission for Mozambique)

  • Wide ranging mandate combining humanitarian, peacekeeping + political tasks.
