• If B12 and folate deficiency =

  replace B12 first to prevent subacute degeneration of spinal cord
• Treatment of iron deficiency =

  Oral - every other day due to hepcidin

  With vitamin C + avoid caffeine

  IV = monomer
• Treatment of B12 deficiency =

  Pernicious anaemma - IM (lifelong)

  Oral due to diet

  Neuro-anemic syndrome - IM alternate days till resolution
• Neuro-anaemic syndrome = Medical emergency
• IV iron used in diverticulitis or HHT or gastritis
• Anaemia blood tests + before transfusions =

  Ferritin

  Transferrin

  B12

  Folate

  Blood film

  Reticulocytes
