Explanation of abnormal/atypical behaviour

    Cards (6)

    • Behaviourism
See abnormality as rising from maladaptive or faulty learning: inappropriate/destructive patterns or behaviours have been reinforced. Behavioural therapies like systematic desensitisation help treat phobias
    • Social learning theory
Little application to treatment. Modelling and observational learning models have been used to explain how negative behaviours such as aggression may be learned through dysfunctional role models
    • Psychodynamic approach
Freud saw anxiety disorders as emerging from unconscious conflict, childhood trauma and overuse of defense mechanisms. Psychoanalysis has had some success from patients but not appropriate with schizophrenia patients
    • Cognitive therapy
More applicable and effect in treatment of depression especially when combined with behaviour therapy as CBT : aims to identify and eradicate faulty thinking so assumed cause of maladaptive behaviour
    • Humanistic therapy

Based on Roger's philosophy that closing gap between self-concept and ideal self will stimulate personal growth
    • Biological approach

Revolutionised treatment of mental disorders through development of drug therapy which regulates chemical imbalance in the brain
