Mitosis

Cards (6)

  • Interphase
    • G1: cell grows, organelles replicate, new proteins made
    • S: DNA replicates, each chromosome consists of 2 identical sister chromatids and are joined at the centromere
    • G2: cell grows, new proteins made, chromosomes repair
  • Prophase
    • chromosomes condense and become visible in the nucleus
    • nuclear envelope breaks down
    • centrioles move to opposite poles and form spindle fibres
  • Metaphase
    • chromosomes line up along the equator of the cell
    • they attach to spindle fibres by their centromere
  • Anaphase
    • centromeres divide, separating each pair of sister chromatids
    • spindle fibres shorten, pulling chromatids to opposite poles of the spindle
  • Telophase
    • chromosomes reach the opposite poles and decondense
    • a nuclear envelope forms around each set of chromosomes
  • Cytokinesis
    • cytoplasm divides, forming 2 genetically identical daughter cells
