  • Aims
    1. To find arguments that guns should be abolished in the US
    2. To find arguments that guns should not be abolished in the US
    3. To find the publics view on guns being abolished in the US
  • Aims 1
    • Source E, guns aren’t effective in deterring criminal activity
    • One of the major arguments is that guns can be used for self defence
    • It is shown that guns are not effective in deterring shooting or criminal activity
    • For example, 327 people are shot every day in the US, 117 die while 210 deal with life altering injuries
  • Aim 1
    • Source E, I found out that guns are not typically used for self defence
    • Even though many guns owners state they own a gun for self defence reasons (72% in 2023)
    • However, 9 times as many people report being victimised by a gun than being protected by one
  • Aim 1
    • Source E, most defensive gun uses are harmful to society
    • There are many more non violent occurrences that turn violent quickly by irresponsible and uneducated gun owners
    • For example, on April 13 2023, 16 year old Ralph Yarl went to the wrong house to pick up his brothers and was shot by an 84 year old man
  • Aim 2
    • Source G, guns are a second amendment right
    • Many citizens of the US believe owning a gun is something they deserve
    • For example, the NRA states that gun control places limits on Americans freedom
  • Aim 2
    • Source G, gun control does not work the way advocates say it does
    • criminals will not obey gun control.
    • By definition, a criminal disobeys the law and will therefore disobey gun control
    • For example, only 10% of criminals who used a firearm arm during the crime they committed to get them to jail got it through a retail/ethical source, 90%obtained it illegally
  • Aim 2
    • Source B, owning a gun for protection can reduce the likelihood of robbery, assault and rape
    • Survey conducted by California state University Professor Gary Kleck shows that all different types of guns were used more defensively than criminally
    • For example, using a gun reduces the risk of injury to close to zero when being assaulted
  • Aim 3
    • Source A, majority of people in America believe it is too easy to obtain a gun (61% day it is too easy)
    • However, America is split whether it is more important to protect the Second Amendment Right to own a gun or control gun laws
  • Aim 3
    • From source H, I found out that many people feel unsafe around guns
    • On my survey, the average rating is a 2.8/10 on how safe you feel around guns.
    • I also found out that 70% of people that completed my survey say that abolishing guns in the US will reduce violent crime rates
    • This is substantially larger than the 12% who said it would not reduce violent crime rates
  • Aim 3
    • From Source A, I found out that around half of Americans (49%) say that gun violence is a major problems
    • This is highlighted when the majority of Kindergarten to grade 12 teachers said that they were at least somewhat worried about the possibility of a shooting happening at their school
  • Conclusion
    • In conclusion, I believe that guns should be abolished in the US
    • This is because many Americans have shown interest that they want to increase gun laws and make it harder to obtain a gun
    • Even though American gun owners say they own a gun for self protection, statistics show that gun ownership does more harm than good
    • Overall if their were less guns in America, I believe people would feel safer and accidents involving guns are less likely to happen
