  • Explain what is meant by depression
    A mood disorder - the person will experience a low mood for most of the day for at least two weeks - they also experience a diminished interest in activities they used to enjoy
  • Outline two behavioural characteristics of depression
    Change in sleeping patterns - they could experience insomnia (difficult sleeping) or hypersomnia (sleeping too much)
    Change in eating habits - they could experience an increase or loss in appetite which leads to noticeable changes in weight
  • Outline two emotional characteristics of depression
    A low mood - they have to experience this for most of the day for at least two weeks
    A diminished interest in activities they used to enjoy. This can result in them withdrawing from hobbies, events etc.
  • Outline two cognitive characteristics of depression
    low self esteem - they may think they are incompetent/ not good enough. This can make them overly sensitive to others opinions of them.
    Poor concentration - they may experience difficulties focusing so can become easily distracted. This can, in turn, lead to poor memory.
