Social Learning Theory
Social Learning Theory
Learning takes place in a
social context
Occurs through
observation
of the behaviour of others and the
rewards
or
punishments
observed for the behaviour
This is known as
vicarious reinforcement
Other people act as
models
and the
characteristics
of the models influence the likelihood of imitation of the behaviour
Learning
and
Performance
are not the same activities
Mediational Processes affecting production of behaviour
Attention
- watching behaviour
Retention
- thinking about it/remembering
Motor reproduction
- thinking about ones own performance ability to perform the behaviour
Motivation
- the will to perform behaviour, often due to observed reward
Reciprocal
determinism
We are
influenced
by our environment, but we also have an
influence
upon it ourselves - this is
soft
determinism, with an
element
of free will
