the person being tested should sit with their arm resting on the edge of the table, to stop them from moving their arm up or down
2. hold a ruler vertically between their thumb and index finger. make sure the zero end of the ruler is level with their thumb and finger, then let go
3. measure their reaction time using the number on the ruler where its caught, read from the bottom of the thumb. The further down the ruler is caught, the slower their reaction time
4. repeat the test several times then calculate mean distance that the ruler fell
