  • What is contraception?
    A method used to prevent pregnancy by either preventing a sperm cell from fertilising an egg cell or by preventing the implantation of a fertilised egg cell in the uterus lining
  • What are the two types of contraception?
    • Hormonal, which is the use of hormones of the menstrual cycle to prevent pregnancy
    • Physical, which is by physically preventing the sperm from fertilising the egg or some methods work by preventing a fertilised egg from implanting in the uterus
  • Physical contraception:
    • Barrier contraception like condoms, cervical cap, femidoms
    • Condoms and femidoms decrease the risk of STDs
  • Chemical contraception:
    • Spermicides
  • Chemical and hormonal contraceptions:
    • Vaginal ring stops ovulation
    • iud contains copper which kills sperm and stops ovulation
    • contraceptive implant, stops ovulation and egg maturation
    • pill, injection, patches
  • Abstinence and rhythm are other ways of contraception
