Eric Act 3

Cards (3)

  • familial Vs monetary Success
failures of parenting and idolising wealth highlighted again. "because you're not the kind of father a chap could go to when he's in trouble - that's why" monetary success does not equivocate or is not omnipotent over love and compassion. Priestley uses this scene, mostly Eric and Mr B to highlight the futility of capitalism: money garnered (collected) to impress others will plague your own home.
  • responsibility
"then you killed her, she came to you to protect me - and you turned her away - yes" The hyphenated speech shows Eric has found solicitude (compassion) for the life loss as a consequence of their ignorance.
  • usage of women
Eva's struggles are emblematic (symbolic) of those struggles faced by women in the early 20th century society. "she was pretty and a good sport -" reinforces the depravity of the mindset of high society - hes objectifying
"sport" is an activity for entertainment - Eric saw women as entertainment to fill the empty void of his life
    -alcohol served the same purpose.
