  • Coronary heart disease is the build up of fatty material in the arteries. These arteries narrow, reducing the flow of oxygen to the heart. When plaque builds up to the point it ruptures, it causes a blood clot in the coronary artery. The blood clot blocks blood from flowing to the heart muscle, causing heart attacks.
  • Studies in the US suggests that pollution and particulate matter from Industry and transport systems may have an effect on CHD.
  • CHD mortality rates were higher in areas with lower temperatures and hours of sunshine. Cold and damp winters have a negative impact on cardiorespiratory system which causes heart attacks.
  • Cold temperatures are responsible for 40% of Angina attacks
  • Poor diet and lifestyle choices are responsible for 1/3 of CHD deaths
  • Poorer people living in TowerHamlets have 3x the risk of dying prematurely from CHD than people who live in Chelsea.
  • Mortality rates are 60% higher in smokers.
  • 22% of heart attacks in Western Europe were due to high hypertension
  • British Heart Foundation raised £144 million in 2022/2023. £99 million was put towards medical research and £45 million was put towards patient care
