Gender Bias

• Alpha bias is when the difference between men and women in a study is exaggurated
• Beta bias is when the difference between men and women is minimised or ignored. Beta bias leads to androcentrism. Androcentrism is when male dominant studies and beta bias causes regular female behaviour to be viewed as abnormal.
• Only using men in a study and labelling it a human study is an example of androcentrisim
• sexism within research means that studies not involving men are neglected
• Reflexivity is acknowledging that a study will have unconscious bias and what its impacts on the study will be
