• take part in cell division
• they form spindle fibres which move chromosomes during nuclear division
• small hollow cylinders made from two bundles of microtubules at right angles to each other
• found in the cytoplasm in animal cells but only in some plant cells
• involved with the separation of chromosomes during cell division
• two associated centrioles form the centrosome which is involved in the assembly and organisation of the spindle fibres
