• they destroy worn out organelles and whole cells
• phagocytic white blood cells engulf and digest pathogens by phagocytosis. many lysosomes present to do this
• lysosomes fuse with the membrane of organelles or cells and release chemicals such as hydrogen peroxide, enzymes and free radicals which destroy them
