  • Animals increase their chance of survival by responding to changes in their environment. they also respond to changes in their internal environment to make sure that the conditions are always optimal for their metabolism.
  • Plants increase their chance of survival by responding to changes in their environment this could be internal or external which are called a stimulus
  • What are receptors
They detect stimuli and only detect one particular stimulus
  • What is a stimulus
A change in internal or external environment such as change in temperature, light intensity or pressure
  • Some receptors are cells such as photoreceptors that connect to the nervous system. Or proteins on cell surface membranes such as glucose receptors which are found in plasma membranes of some pancreatic cells
  • What are effectors
Cells that bring about a response to stimulus to produce an effect
  • Effectors include muscle cells and cells found in glands such as the pancreas
  • Receptors and effectors play an important role in communicating information from one part of an organism to another. this makes sure that the activities of different organs are coordinated to keep the organism working effectively
  • What is a response
An organisms reaction to the stimulus
