    • Beck's cognitive theory of depression (1967)

Some people's cognitions make them more vulnerable to depression.
Three parts to this cognitive vulnerability:
      Faulty information processing
      Negative self-schema
      The negative triad
    • Faulty information processing
When depressed people tend to focus on the negative of a situation :
Blow very small things out of all proportion.
      Think very black and white.
      Overgeneralisations and catastrophic thoughts.
    • Negative self-schema
Self-schemas are ideas and frameworks through which we perceive information about ourselves. Negative self-schemas are unhealthy, degrading, and harmful versions of these self-beliefs.
    • Negative triad
A person develops a dysfunctional view of themselves because of three types of negative thinking that occur, these occur automatically and regardless of the reality of the situation.
      Negative views of the world.
      Negative views of the future.
      Negative views of the self.
    • Ellis' ABC model

Conditions such as depression and anxiety are the result of irrational beliefs.
Activating event - we experience negative events which trigger beliefs.
Belief - can be rational or irrational.
Consequences - rational beliefs lead to healthy emotions whereas irrational beliefs lead to unhealthy emotions.
    • Musterbation
The belief that we must always succeed or achieve perfection - failure will result in shame.
    • I-can't-stand-it-itus
It's a major disaster whenever something doesn't go smoothly.
    • Utopianism
The belief that life is always meant to be fair.
