  • Tiberius religious attitudes where similar to that of Augustus.
  • He wanted to give preference to Roman deities and cult, maintain the Imperial Cult with variances for Rome and the provinces and to suppress the unwanted beliefs such as Druidism in Gaul.
  • He would not allow the worship of himself, he maintained the cult by allowing worship of Augustus and the Imperial family.
  • Tiberius would manage this in several ways:
    • imperial cult - managing the worship of himself and the imperial family
    • religious positions - holding offices such as pontifex maximus
    • rome and the provinces - by adjusting policy depending on whether in rome, the west or east
    • foreign cults - the acceptance or suppression of foreign cults at the express of the roman pantheon
