  • S - specific
    Targets state exactly what needs to be achieved
    E.g. the muscles that need to be strengthened, or the skill that needs to be improved
  • M -measurable
    It needs to be clear when a target has been achieved
    E.g. completing a distance race in a particular time, or lifting a particular weight
  • A - accepted
    The target is agreed between all of the individuals involved in training
    E.g. the coach and the performer agree on a target together
  • R - realistic
    The target should be achievable for the individual performer in their specific circumstances
    E.g. the performer has the ability, and the training facilities are available
  • T - time bound
    The target will be met within a given time period
    E.g. a performer will aim to enter a specific race in a given year
