What is the difference between internal and external reliability?
Internal- a test or measure is consistent in itself e.g standardised results and procedure
External- is consistent over time e.g if it was repeated over-time it would show the same results
What are the 5 issues with reliability?
Only one researcher used
Research is only carried out once
Instructions aren’t given in the same way
Variables are not clearly defined and operationalised
Participants aren't asked the questions in the same way
What is inter-rater reliability?
Concerned with consistency of results from two or more researchers where they categorise behaviour from observations. There should be a high correlation to give inter-rater reliability.
What is the split-half method?
Assess internal reliability by comparing 2 halves of a measure and measures individuals performance. Results are compared to look for a correlation. A high positive correlation means good internal reliability.
What is the test-retest method?
Assesses external reliability by testing once and then again to look for consistency of outcome as the same results lead to a high correlation.
