• Met for the first time at Gresham College, London in 1660
• Aimed to promote the sharing of scientific knowledge, and encourage argument about theories and ideas
• Received a royal charter from Charles II, showing the King's support for the project
• Made it possible for physicians and scientists to access and study each other's research
• People sent their work in to be published and were more willing to donate money to the cause
• Had a raised status from the royal charter
• Encouraged research and debate
