  • Utterson is studying the will of his good friend Jekyll, but notices it states that in the disappearance or sudden death of Jekyll, all of his belongings were to be given to Hyde
    • Utterson goes to Lanyon in seek of some answers but Lanyon wasn't aware of who 'Hyde' was and hadn't been in touch with Jekyll since there professional conflicts 10 years ago
    • Lanyon doesn't speak highly of Jekyll and openly scrutinises his scientific fascinations
    • Utterson desperately goes to Jekyll after encountering Hyde to warn him about this strange man. He thinks that Hyde may harm Jekyll to get the money from the will. Poole (Jekyll's butler) informs Utterson that Jekyll is not home.
    • Utterson thinks that Jekyll is being blackmailed by Hyde
  • Chapter 2 - The search for Mr Hyde
    • Utterson weeks later, bring up the will to Jekyll in concern
    • Jekyll laughs off Utterson's talk about the will, but gets Utterson to promise him that his will won't be changed - 3
