criminal subcultures are when criminals select and train youths with the right abilities and provide them with opportunities on the criminal career ladder
conflict subcultures provide an alternative source of status earned by winning ‘turf’ from rival gangs
retreatists subcultures are when people fail in both the legitimate and illegitimate subcultures and turn to a ‘drop out’ subculture which is based on illegal drug use
