practical investigation

Cards (6)

  • what was the aim of cognitive practical?
To test recall of acoustic similarity and acoustic dissimilarity in STM
  • cognitive practical method:
    • used repeated measures
    • presented a list of 10 words - first being acoustically dissimilar then acoustically similar sounding words
    • participants were asked to recall all 10 words in one minute after looking at them for 3 seconds
  • Cognitive practical FINDINGS:
Used measures of central tendency and data showed that the mean is higher on list 2 which means it was easier to remember than list 1- by using willcoxon it was found that data was not significant
  • Strengths of cognitive practical:
    • Is a field experiment which creates a more naturalistic approach which can be applied to real life situations such as preparing for exams
    • provides evidence for Baddeley's study thus proving inter-rater reliability
  • Problems with the cognitive practical:
    • Participants used were college students which limits generalisability to target population
    • Used a opportunity sample which only regards who is available at the time
    • TO IMPROVE- use a variety of participants
  • how could cognitive practical be improved?
Change the methodology from repeated measures to independent groups as it would remove chance of order effects influencing the participants responses to recalling the lost of words in the second acoustically dissimilar condition, therefore producing valid findings into memory recall
