  • high rates of gene flow is result of migration of individuals between different populations within same species.
  • allows for introduction of new alleles into gene pool of population changing allele frequency leading to increase in genetic variation
  • however if populations too isolated, low rate of migration and low rates of gene flow decreasing genetic varation
  • if isolated for long enough this leads to speciation
