neural- neurotransmitters

Cards (5)

    • Serotonin: Regulates mood. Low levels are linked to OCD and depression.
    • Piggott et al. (1990): SSRIs, which increase serotonin, are effective in treating OCD.
    • Dopamine: High levels are associated with compulsive behaviors in OCD.
  • the steps of neurotransmitters and what they are are in the biological approach and should be evident
  • Dopamine as a biological explanation for OCD
Dopamine is a neurotransmitter involved in motivation and reward behaviour. Dopamine levels are extremely /abnormally high in people with OCD. High levels of dopamine are liked to the compulsive behaviours seen in OCD.
  • Serotonin as a biological explanation for OCD
Serotonin levels that are extremely / abnormally low are associated with OCD. Low levels of serotonin lead to impaired transmission of mood-related information. These may contribute to the dysregulation of mood and anxiety, which contribute to OCD symptoms. Low levels of serotonin are also linked to obsessive thoughts.
