Sex role stereotypes & androgyny

    Cards (4)

    • Gender stereotypes - a set of shared expectations within a social group about what men & women should do & think
    • Gender stereotypes are learnt from birth. This could be implicit as well as explicit because we model the behaviour of individuals of the same sex
    • Androgyny - both masculine & feminine
    • Bem suggests being androgynous is psychologically more healthy as it avoids fixed role stereotypes & doesn’t stifle personality
