    cover one nostril and have pt smell something + identify it
  • how do you test the optic nerve (2)?

    test the pt's peripheral vision
  • how do you test the oculomotor (3), trochlear (4), and abducen (6) nerves?

    move a pen or finger in an H motion/british flag
  • how do you test the trigeminal nerve (5)?

    have pt close eyes and use cotton to touch cheek, chin, & forehead. have them say when they feel it. have them clench their jaw & open against resistance
  • how do you test the facial nerve (7)?

    have the pt smile, frown, crease forehead, close eyes tightly, puff cheeks out
  • how do you test the vestibulocochlear nerve (8)?

    hands on hips standing on one foot (eyes closed), snapping/saying something in one ear and asking them to repeat what they heard
  • how do you test the glossopharyngeal nerve (9)?

    have them open and say "ah", have them taste something + tell you what it tastes like
  • how do you test the vagus nerve (10)?

    have pt swallow + speak
  • how do you test the accessory nerve (11)?

    have pt shrug their shoulders and turn head left to right, resisting mvmt
  • how do you test the hypoglossal nerve (12)?

    have pt stick out tongue?
