Permanent and induced magnets

• A bar magnet has two ends (poles)

  . North Pole

  . Shouts pole
• Magnetic forces are strongest at the pole of a magnet
• When we bring two magnets close together they exert a force on each other
• The attraction and repulsion between two magnetic poles are both examples of non contact forces
• What is a permanent magnet

  . Produces its own magnetic field e.g. bar magnet
• What is an induced magnet

  . Object that becomes a magnet when placed in a magnetic field
• How do you make an induced magnet

  . Two normal objects

  . Place a permanent magnet between them (there is a magnetic field around the magnet)

  . The magnetic field has caused the two objects to become magnets
• induced magnetism always causes a force of attraction
• If we take away the permenant magnet, the induced magnets lose most or all of their magnetism quickly
