Cards (26)

  • what is respiration?
    • chemical reaction that released energy from glucose
  • what is the purpose of respiration?
    • respiration used to make ATP - which stores energy needed for many cell processes
    • cell requires energy - ATP molecules break down and energy released
  • what is aerobic respiration?
    • plenty of oxygen available - most efficient way to transfer energy from glucose
    • produces lots of ATP - 32 molecules per molecule of glucose
  • what is anaerobic respiration?
    • anaerobic respiration is lack of oxygen and very poor at converting glucose to energy
    • releases much less per glucose molecules than aerobic - 2 molecules of ATP produced
    • glucose partially broken down - lactic acid produces
    • lactic acid builds up in muscles - gets painful and leads to cramps
  • what is the word equation for aerobic respiration?
    • glucose + oxygen - carbon dioxide + water (+ energy)
  • what is the chemical equation for aerobic respiration?
    • C6H12O6 + 6O2 - 6CO2 + 6H20
  • what is the word equation for anaerobic respiration?
    • glucose - lactic acid (+ energy)
  • what is the word equation for anaerobic respiration in plants?
    • glucose - ethanol +carbon dioxide (+ energy)
