  • Mercia, Kent and Wessex = wealthiest (rich farmland) and most populated earldoms
  • earldoms were divided into shires - each shire had a few villages - each village had a thegn (local lord)
  • few towns - maximum 10000 people
  • 2 million population
  • Cornwall = largely unpopulated
  • Wales = not controlled by England
  • Burgh - town (Anglo-Danish)
  • North - vocab, customs = different to the AS south of England
  • East Anglia - low land and marshy
